Resilience The purpose of this discussion forum is to consider the topic of Resilience, The concept of resilience emerged in the 1960s and has evolved for over half a century. In general, resilience is the capacity to adapt well to significant adversity and to overcome serious stress. Below are the three important factors that have been communicated about resilience: Resilience is a dynamic, not a stable, trait. That means a given person may be resilient at some periods but not others, and the effects from one period reverberate as time goes on. Resilience is a positive adaptation to stress, not mere passive endurance. Adversity must be significant, a threat to the process of development or even to life itself. Step 1: Think about the description of resilience above, and also think about how your textbook has described resilience. Step 2: Read the scenario below. As you read the scenarios, think about what you have read about the topic of resilience. Scenario 1— Tim’s family has been experiencing poverty for the past 5 years. At times, the family is homeless and lives out of the family van. Tim just won the fifth grade spelling bee at his school and will advance to the state spelling bee. Is Tim demonstrating resilience? Why or why not? Scenario 2— Ashley lives with her parents, who are both doctors, and younger sister in a suburban neighborhood. Recently her mom had surgery and was unable to take care of family responsibilities for about a week. During this time Ashley had to help out more around the house, but she still found time to write a book report that earned her an A. Is Ashley demonstrating resilience? Why or why not? Scenario 3— Arnold lives with his mother and five siblings. For the past year, Arnold’s mother has been unemployed due to her inability to keep a job because of alcohol addiction. Many times during the year Arnold and his family have gone to bed hungry since there was never enough food in the house. Throughout this entire time, Arnold got himself up every morning to go to school. He loved to go to school as he had many friends and did well in all subjects, but he did best in math. Is Arnold demonstrating resilience? Why or why not? Step 3: In this discussion forum, please thoroughly answer, and post your response to the questions posed after each scenario.
